Biodegradable Towel Claims: Which Materials Qualify
"Biodegradable" is the most requested adjective in disposable textiles and the easiest one to get wrong on packaging. The claim follows the fibre. It does not follow the product name, the format or the price point.
Where the claim can stand
Four material families are recorded for face towels: 100% viscose, 100% cotton, viscose with polyester, and viscose with lyocell. Three of those can carry a biodegradable claim — 100% viscose, 100% cotton, and the viscose and lyocell combination. The viscose and polyester blend cannot, because the polyester component does not meet the same end-of-life condition as the cellulosic part.
Why the blend is the usual failure
A supplier quoting "biodegradable face towels" and then shipping a viscose and polyester blend has not necessarily lied about the fibre — they have applied one claim to a range that contains more than one material. This is the single most common way the claim goes wrong, and it is a wording problem rather than a production problem. The fix is to write the material into the claim, on the packaging and in the quotation, so the two cannot drift apart.
Biodegradable and compostable are not the same claim
They are recorded as separate applicability fields in our data for a reason. Biodegradability describes what happens to the material over time under defined conditions; compostability describes a specific end-of-life pathway with its own requirements on disintegration, residue and the environment it happens in. A towel that supports the first claim does not automatically support the second, and packaging text that uses them interchangeably invites a market complaint.
What still has to be evidenced
Material eligibility is necessary and not sufficient. Before the word goes on a retail pack, the destination market's requirements for that claim have to be met, with evidence held on file. Our product data states this boundary explicitly and it applies to every market we ship to: the fibre family decides whether the claim is available, and the market decides whether it can be printed.
How to write the specification
Put the material in the same line as the claim. "100% viscose face towel, 60 GSM, 20 × 20 cm, biodegradable claim applicable" is auditable. "Biodegradable disposable face towel" is a sentence that can be true of the sample and false of the shipment, which is the outcome nobody wants.
The four recorded material families are listed on the disposable face towel page; the market and testing position is set out under quality control.
