New Industry Data Points to a Specification-First Shift in Professional Hygiene Procurement

A professional buyer reviews a 40 x 80 cm pearl-pattern disposable spunlace nonwoven salon towel beside sourcing data and packaged product formats.

QINGDAO, CHINA — September 26, 2026 — Recent data from the United States, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, and Europe is pointing to a more disciplined approach to professional hygiene procurement. Across salons, spas, elder care, hospitality, fitness, outdoor travel, and pet care, buyers are being asked to define not only what they purchase, but also how a product will be used, packed, labeled, and documented for its destination market.

The evidence does not support a single global demand story. Instead, it shows three pressures arriving at the same time: changing service volumes, persistent labor and operating-cost constraints, and clearer responsibilities for materials and private-label packaging.

Spa growth is arriving alongside staffing pressure

BeautyMatter, reporting on the 2026 ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study, said U.S. spa revenue rose 4.2% in 2025 to a record $23.5 billion, while visits reached 191 million. At the same time, 21,450 service-provider positions remained unfilled, and one in three survey respondents identified staffing as their biggest challenge for 2026.

For suppliers, the relevant connection is not that a disposable product can solve a labor shortage. It is that high-frequency service businesses need a more explicit operating specification: towel size, material, GSM, surface texture, pack count, storage format, and the point in the service workflow where each item is used. Folded bulk packs may fit back-of-house salon and spa operations, while individually wrapped formats serve a different need in guest-facing or mobile settings.

Salon revenue data makes per-service cost more important

The Professional Beauty Association's August 2026 update reported that salon revenue through July was 1.62% above the prior year. Average service price increased 3.05%, while service volume, client counts, and visit frequency remained slightly below 2025 levels. Retail revenue fell 3.07%, with units down 5.09%.

Those figures suggest that revenue growth was being supported more by pricing than by a broad increase in traffic. For salon buyers, that makes a per-service comparison more useful than a simple per-pack price. A complete sourcing review should include the chosen towel specification, pieces used per service, packaging, storage, disposal, and any existing laundry process. Cost or labor savings should be claimed only when a buyer has measured its own workflow.

Care and limited-water cleaning require application-specific validation

Japan's Statistics Bureau reported that the population aged 65 and over reached 36.24 million as of September 15, 2026, representing a record 29.6% of the population. Recent home-care and post-discharge-care developments in South Korea and the United States also highlight continued pressure on care staffing and operating capacity.

This creates a practical product-development question around cleaning routines for older adults, people with limited mobility, travel, and other situations where a conventional shower is not readily available. Water-activated rinse-free bathing sponges can be evaluated for these workflows, but formula, skin compatibility, labeling, microbiological documentation, shelf life, and destination-market requirements must be confirmed for the final product. General market data is not a substitute for product-specific evidence.

Outdoor travel and pet care are becoming connected use cases

The RV Industry Association reported that 23 million Americans planned an RV trip in fall 2026, with more than 71% expecting to bring pets. Separately, the American Pet Products Association reported 71 million U.S. dog-owning households, with 51% of dog owners grooming their pets at home. Ownership of pet wipes increased 108% year over year.

The pet-wipe figure does not by itself prove demand for pet towels. It does, however, show that routine pet care is moving further into the home and travel environment. Relevant sourcing concepts include disposable pet-grooming towels for drying and wiping, individually packed human-use towels for travel, and water-activated body-cleaning products for limited-water situations. Human and pet applications should remain separately specified and labeled.

Private-label projects now need material and packaging responsibility defined earlier

European regulatory updates reinforce the need for precise product records. The European Commission's updated guidance on single-use plastic products distinguishes wet wipes made entirely from unmodified natural polymers, such as viscose or lyocell, from products containing polymers such as polyester. It also notes that intended use, distribution channel, and end user matter when determining whether a wet wipe is designed for professional rather than personal or domestic use.

These wet-wipe provisions should not automatically be applied to dry disposable towels or other product formats. Classification must be assessed against the actual material, product presentation, claims, route to market, and intended user.

Germany's Central Agency Packaging Register has also highlighted the European Commission's clarification that a retailer or brand owner that has packaged goods manufactured under its own name or trademark may be treated as the producer under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, even when standard packaging is used. Germany's Federal Environment Agency notes that the regulation has applied directly across EU member states since August 12, 2026, with conformity documentation and other requirements depending on the packaging and applicable implementation dates.

For private-label buyers, this makes packaging a compliance workstream, not simply a graphic-design decision. Material composition, packaging structure, labeling language, responsible party, destination requirements, and supporting documentation should be discussed before artwork and mass production are approved.

“These industry signals do not mean that one product fits every market. They show why professional buyers increasingly need to define where a product will be used, who will use it, how it will be packed, and what destination-market information is required,” a Jaroll spokesperson said. “Clear agreement on material, size, GSM, texture, color, packaging, and labeling is the foundation for sampling, quotation, and consistent production.”

    A specification-first sourcing model

For professional-use disposable nonwoven products, Jaroll recommends beginning each project with five questions:

    1. What is the exact use environment and service workflow?
    2. Which material, size, GSM, texture, and color are required?
    3. Should the product use folded bulk packaging, individual packaging, or another confirmed format?
    4. Which brand, barcode, labeling, carton, and destination-market requirements apply?
    5. Which performance, environmental, safety, or compliance statements require supporting evidence?

Market data can identify a commercial direction. The final product decision still depends on a confirmed specification, representative samples, packaging review, and product- and market-specific documentation.
